A New Website: What you need to know

Having a website to support your business is definitely a great idea.  But first, understanding and realizing what role you see the website playing in your business is very essential. Whether you want to get new clients, sell products online or you only want to promote certain specials on the website and have people visit the store, your website needs to have its vital role in an integrated business strategy.

The most important step you should take prior to getting a new website is by clearly defining the purpose of your site. Because not only it will help you identify the kind of features and functionality that will be required on the website, it will also help you identify the information and content that is to be used before starting a new website. After you have established the intention of your site, you can now start incorporating that goal in every aspect of your website design, structure and layout.

With a clear idea of the purpose of your site in mind, now consider what you will need to make that happen.  Elements to consider would be how many pages, what would go on these pages, other functions the site needs to have and the investment required.  This investment could be both time and money because even if you hire someone else to do all the work you will still need to spend some time with the project particularly during development.

Budgeting is another important factor in the website development process.   Often the cost of design is considered and yet design is only part of the process.  Adding written content to your pages, adding more pages, making changes, adding new functions and enhancements along with marketing your website incur costs that you will need to make allowances for.

Surprisingly, most small businesses have a website just for the sake of having it with no plan or strategy on how they are going to bring or attract more visitors to the site.   Without these visitors your chance of increasing enquires, leads and sales is drastically reduced.  Surely one of the goals for most business websites is to add to the bottom line profits.  If so, there are two important factors to achieving this.  One is getting people to visit your website who are likely to do business with you and the second is ensuring they carry out your desired action which could be calling you, filling out an enquiry form or purchasing something.

Once your site is up and running, make sure your marketing and promotion activities both on-site and off-site are working smoothly and are integrated.

One way of seeing how effective your website and marketing is, is through the data that your website produces for you to analyse.  This data can help you  to find out which marketing efforts make the highest number of conversions. Take note that you may have a scenario where less visitors to your site can mean higher conversions ie. sales.  This occurs when you are able to fine tune your marketing to reach more qualified prospects.  All you need here is to just review your analytics each month to track whether your marketing campaigns are either increasing or decreasing your conversions and where positive changes can be made.

One more thing, new websites should be clean and clear, and in line with your company image. So, make sure your designers are very aware of your brand and marketing messages.  If you are a new company, taking the time to develop a strong identity and clarifying your marketing strategy so that your website fits well is important.

Indeed, a clear and well thought out action plan for your site and its marketing can increase the effectiveness of your new website. Rather than being like many businesses who have a website and are disappointed because it hasn't helped their business, tap into the power of a website that fulfills its role for increasing your business sales and the profit potential in your business.
